Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution designed for penetration testing, making it invaluable for security specialists, cyberwarriors, and enthusiasts. Formerly known as BackTrack Linux, Kali includes a comprehensive suite of tools and applications for hacking. It can be used as a Live OS or installed as a host operating system, just like any other Linux distribution.

However, it’s not recommended to use Kali as a general-purpose desktop operating system in the beginning. Additionally, when using the Live DVD version, settings are not saved after a system reboot. In such cases, virtual machines provide an excellent alternative.

This guide will explain how to install Kali Linux on VirtualBox. While this example uses Linux as the host operating system, the workflow can also be applied to Windows and macOS.

Install Kali Linux On VirtualBox Using A Preconfigured VM

Step #1:Download the appropriate OVA template from the official Offensive Security website.

Step #2: Unpack contents from the archive.

Step #3: Click + Add to add an existing virtual machine to VirtualBox.

Step #4: Select the .vbox file extracted from the downloaded archive.

Step #5:A VM has been imported. Start the VM with Kali Linux on VirtualBox by selecting this VM and clicking the Start button.

The default credentials to log in to Kali Linux on VirtualBox by using a downloaded VM are kali/kali.
